CAREER TRACK

Ruby on Rails Developer

Today, you install Ruby!

Before we take on the BIG task at hand, I want to talk to you a little bit more about programming...

In programming, there are three types of problems:

1. The really big, hard, real-world problems

These are the types of problems that are simply... hard to figure out.

They aren't hard from a "Can the computer handle itself?" perspective. They're just challenging brain ticklers.

For example, let's say you wanted to create an app that sends daily push notifications to all Leos but customizes the message for Leos whose rising sign was Saturn.

How would you do that?

These are the types of problems developers LOVE. In fact, I bet you can find a developer or two who will explicitly say (on their website) that what they want is HARD PROBLEMS to solve.

2. The problems YOU create

The second type of problem, the most COMMON type, is problems that arise because of human error.

Programmers call these problems all kinds of funny things - like PEBCAK Errors (Problem Exists Between Chair and Keyboard) or ID-10-T Errors.

These are the errors and issues you run into when you misbehave and forget semi-colons, misspell method names or don't pass your methods the arguments it needs.

In other words, in these situations, the computer is acting exactly as expected; you just aren't giving it the right input. Beginners are most likely to think that their problems are type #3 (see below), but their problems are usually this type.

3. The problems the COMPUTER creates

These are the problems that come up when you are doing everything right, but your computer is acting like it took a big hit of laughing gas this morning.

Think errors with strange numbers. And other weird behavior...

These are the problems that you are going to encounter today when you install Ruby - Yippee!

When you run into these errors, there's nothing to do but take a deep breath and methodically try to understand what is going on. That and ask your Skillcrush instructor for help! :)

P.S. Calling all PC users: You can ignore all of these warnings because your Ruby installation process will be a BREEZE - like three minutes tops with time carved out for dawdling. Woohoo!

Your To Dos

Happy Ruby Installation Day!

P.S. We've got a whole thread dedicated to your install woes and cheers so join us there to tell us about any problems you run into.
